Running Man

The New York City marathon champion on running, religion and what it means to be an American.

By BARI WEISS

When Meb Keflezighi finished the New York City Marathon in two hours, nine minutes and 15 seconds the morning after Halloween, he became the first American to win the race in 27 years. But some spectators apparently missed the three red letters on his chest as he burst through the tape. Keflezighi is only "technically American," argued CNBC sports writer Darren Rovell. He's "like a ringer who you hire to work a couple hours at your office so that you can win the executive softball league."

Though Mr. Rovell has since backtracked, nobody recalls similar comments about Alberto Salazar, the Cuban-born American who won in 1982. And if Meb's name was Joe Smith and he was born in England rather than Eritrea, few would have questioned his national identity.

When I meet Meb the morning after his appearance on the David Letterman show—almost as great as winning the race, he quips—he is unbothered by the debate raging on the Web about his American-ness. "What's the list of things you need to be an American?" he asks rhetorically. "You live here, you pay taxes, you live by the American way. I've been here for 22 years. I'm as American as you can get."

As for wearing the USA tank top: "What a beautiful day to wear it on. In New York, to win my first marathon in that jersey—it just gave me great pride."

and you thought it was just a junk-mail sign up list

Flyer Elaine H. didn't.  At the ING New York City Marathon Expo, she signed herself up at the BP Booth for the BP Feeling Younger Longer contest, where she starred in a 30 second video telling the world why she runs marathons.  Elaine was named one of 21 finalists and has won free gas for one year!  Now she is competing for gas for life - though she's requested that BP convert any award to a contribution to Harmony Hill, the cancer retreat she supports.  She now gets to star in a 2 minute video - and she promises to plug the NY Flyers!

Keep an eye on the Contest Website, and hopefully we'll see Elaine soon!

More about Meb

I just can't get enough of this story!  Luckily, Runners World is republishing an email from Meb's brother Merhawi Keflezighi about Meb's lead-up to the race last week.

My favorite passage: "So many things have to go right in a marathon and Meb made all those things go right. All the things didn't just happen for Meb; Meb knew he would have to run smart and strong and take risks in order to put himself in position to win the race. Meb believed he could win the ING NYC Marathon starting with his debut in 2002, and every day until Nov. 1, 2009. Meb believed it, never let the dream expire, and ultimately he achieved it!"   Words we have all said (yes, in one form or another) to ourselves, or to each other.   -  The full article. - JM

It's Time to Drive-Again!!

It felt so great in 2008 that we're doing it again in 2009!

Please join your teammates once again in helping the needy in New York City during this holiday season by participating in the 2009 Flyer Food Drive Fundraiser to benefit the Food Bank For New York City.

After a devastating year in the US economy, low-income and other needy New Yorkers need our help more than ever!

The drive runs from Sunday, November 08 until Saturday, December 12, with our grand finale celebration at this year's Flyer Holiday Party.

Please see the info page for all the hows, whens and whys!!  The direct link to the contribution page is here.

Can we outdo ourselves in 2009?  Check back on December 12th to see how we did!

He’s No Sell–Out!

“Getting to the Olympics Was a Victory.” – Brian Sell
3rd at the US Men Marathon Olympic Trials (Marathon PR: 2:10:47)

Just a few nights before the New York City Marathon on November 1, 2009, roughly 75 New York Flyers were fortunate enough to gather for the club’s traditional pasta dinner at a favorite restaurant on the Upper West Side. But, this year was different from last year’s annual dinner.

A familiar name – at least among those in the know on elite runners – accepted an invitation to join in on the party. What’s more, he stayed. He stayed for a while, and attentively answered questions about marathon strategy, life and what’s to come for Brian Sell as post pro-runner.

Clad in a Hanson-Brooks red shirt, Sell had a few quotes to offer that’ll hopefully make us better runners:

Q. What’s it like being part of the team?

a. “We just go out and try to hammer each other.” “My teams are the key to my success.”

Q. Who do you admire most as far as running mentors?

a. My high school coaches. They are given 1/10th of the credit they are worth.

Marathon Stories - NYC 2009

Our very own Future Flyer Lauren P was the lucky local kid to introduce the ING New York City Marathon Champion Derartu Tulu at the start of Sunday's race -  Lauren/Derartu (scroll down).  Lauren's proud Dad Anthony says they had a great time on Sunday - Lauren even got to warm up with Tulu before the race!  Then they were whisked away by VIP bus to the finish line where they had great seats to watch their new favorite Ethiopian win the race!

Earlier in the week, Lauren (following in Dad's fast footsteps) competed in the Run with the Champions with 1,385 runners and placed 68th overall, and 8th female!!  Not bad considering Lauren is only 9 years old and was the youngest kid in the race!   But it's no surprise - she also competed in the Milrose Games in January!!

Mohawk Hudson River Marathon Race Report (Stealing Brian) by Dave G

Oh baby, we came here with our hopes high. Glen W, to be paced by his trusty Sherpa, Brian H, and Jennifer C, each talking Boston Qualifier time. Me, I would have loved that too, but I didn’t want to get a strong PR and then feel bad because I didn’t get a BQ, so I picked 3:53 as a goal, a 5+ minute PR. A 3:45 BQ for me is nuts. But if I could get Sherpa Brian to pace me, like Glen...special Glen, lucky Glen. We hates Glen, my inner Gollum taking over.

All arrived in beautiful downtown Albany mid-afternoon on Saturday, October 10. Jennifer and I found Glen and Brian sprawled on a sofa in the lobby. Homeless looking or maybe they lived in the lobby, couldn’t tell. Dashed to the expo, finding that a race number and a free Bic pen were all the booty we were going to get there. Glen talked race strategy, Brian with a pack and leash would drag Glen like a caveman, get him into Boston. Boston. Brian. Glen says he always bonks, walks. I say if I catch you and you are cooked, I want Brian. How do I catch them? Don’t care. Thinking fast is easier than running fast. And I’m visualizing the moment.

Ed and Emily A showed up, Ed doing his post-race waddle after successfully taming the Hartford Marathon earlier in the day. I was appreciative of their company, but also in awe at how they would just show up far from home in support of friends. That’s what it’s all about.

Real Men (and Women) do Yoga for Runners!

by Dave K

Yoga is boring. Yoga causes injuries. Yoga is inconvenient. Yoga is too hard. Yoga is too easy. Yoga is for females. Yoga isn't helpful for runners.

Or maybe that’s not true?

I've never been flexible. Not just the stubborn type of inflexible (although that, too). I've always had pretty limited flexibility. I remember in kindergarten, Mrs. Kass had us all sit cross-legged. Everyone looked so comfortable. I wondered why, since I sure didn't feel comfy.

But about 15 years ago I decided to give yoga a try after I kept hurting my back and neck. Although I can surely be a pain in the neck, my neck and back pain never returned.
