Go Get'em, Tiger!

新年快乐

Lloyd H. addresses club members

The Flyers had their annual Chinese New Year's Celebration last night. Lloyd H. started the tradition 11 years ago and has hosted it every year since, at Lili's on the Upper East Side. This year, it's the Year of the Tiger, and many Flyer felines were once again there, chowing down on some seriously great Chinese Food (or, as it's known in China, food).

This is a different event than most other Flyers' events. Most of our others social events revolve around drinks and mingling around a bar mixed with other runners and/or non-runners. Lili's is special: we sit and share exotic dishes together, with sprightly conversation all around each of our tables. My neighbours included Sarah D., Susan H., David C., Susan's friend Jill, and our esteemed President, Glen W.  Topics covered everything from the Winter Olympics in Vancouver to balcony herb gardening.

It's a popular event. In fact, it's lucky that we're a running club, because if we were out-of-shape, the seventy or so people that crowded upstairs for the event would have surely brought that balcony level right down on top of that poor restaurant kitchen staff. I met a couple of prospective Flyers, too, Maggie and My L., who both seemed to make themselves comfortably at home among our friendly club members. Let's hope we see more of them in the future.

Lloyd and Glen both addressed the room with warm wishes for the new year, and Lloyd, aside from reminding us that next year will complete the twelve-year zodiac cycle at Lili's, also taught us what OQ meant.  Later, I reflected with Nicole C. and Jamie M. over the previous year, (the Ox, in case you don't remember) and agreed that we were glad to see it go.  The Tiger seems promising, but only time will tell. In the meantime, we can only be sure of one thing: we'll all be back with Lloyd at Lili's next year to greet the Rabbit together. -Eric S.

Happy New Year!

Ray S., Deb M., and Joe J., enjoying the festivities.
