New Flyer Profile: Brian D.
Hello from your Member at Large. Here is my much-delayed New Member Profile. I hope to bring this to you once a month to help us all get to know our new members. Before I introduce Brian, I would like to remind everyone to come out to our Flyer Spring Social Happy Hour, Wednesday at the Mad Hatter Saloon. See the link for more details.
Introducing Brian D.
Brian joined the Flyers in February, but has been running for about 10 years. He started in the 7th grade when he joined the junior high track team in West Virginia. He has continued to run through high school and college.
What inspired him to start? “You know how Forest Gump says he just decided to start running to no apparent reason? That's how I feel about my start. Nobody in my family ever really ran before,” said Brian in a recent conversation.
So that brings us to his start on our team. Brian wanted to find a running group that supported both sides of the athletic and social components. He initially battled the weather in the first few weeks along with school work in grad school at NYU, but really enjoys getting to meet new people and run with a group.
A few quick facts about Brian:
*Biggest athletic influence: Lance Armstrong.
*Favorite quote: “Don't let what you cannot do stop you from doing what you can."- John Wooden
*Best Advice received: “My family doesn’t know much about distance running, so I always liked it when my mom would just say, ‘Don’t stop!’ Simple but effective.”
*Favorite Book: Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman
*Favorite Movie: Forrest Gump
*Favorite Season: Spring because of baseball season and running season
*Favorite Holiday: Halloween because of the Candy Corn.
*Something people may not know about you: Brian has a crippling egg allergy
*Worst Habit: Tendancy to nap
Brian’s running goal for this year is to train for his first half marathon. He’d also like to continue running for charity. In his professional life, he plans to finish grad school and become a Journalist. You can see his writing on his blog here.
