NYRR Scotland 10K Run Recap

What a glorious day for the seventh annual Scotland Run 10K, with brilliant sunshine and temperature at 52 degrees when the gun went off at 10:00 am. The Scottish government was on hand at the start and Scottish band, Whisky Kiss, performed the star spangled banner. It was great seeing both girls and guys wearing all kinds of family themed kilts. On the way to the start my girlfriend Elizabeth and I met a gentleman wearing the Stewart family kilt, and his name was Stuart. It was a funny coincidence, he just happened to pick out the nicest kilt he found at the store and he didn’t know that the kilt’s pattern matched his first name. After listening to Mary Wittenberg’s introduction before the race, it actually made me want to go to Scotland to experience all of the great food, music. Today marked the second points race of the year with a total of 7,790 runners.

I started off running with Elizabeth, and our goal was to start out slow and finish strong. She started out too fast at well below a 7:00 mile, and I could barely hang on, and decided not to try. The goal was that I was supposed to pace her, and then she would sprint past me at the end since she’s a super fast sprinter. The lesson here is that when you go out with a strategy you should try to stick with it. I was trying to beat my last 10K PR in December of 44:13, but finished a few seconds off in 44:25. I am not that strong a runner on the hills, so I was happy that the toughest hills were at the beginning of the race going up the West side of the Park.  I noticed that a lot of runners were passing me running this part of the park at the NYC Half marathon two weeks ago, and focused this week trying to improve on the hills. A big thanks to the tough hill workout Thursday night with my coaches Todd and Jeremy with the Williamsburg Track Club - it really paid off today with a third place finish in my age group! Central Park was in it’s glory today - passing Cleopatra’s Needle with the magnolia trees and daffodils in bloom was breathtaking.

It was really great seeing so many Flyers out today along the course. After the race it was so nice to meet up with fellow Flyers as well as my female Vette team mates. When I joined the club over two years ago, I didn’t know anyone at a NYRRC race, and thanks to so many friendly Flyers, racing now is so much more fun! The Flyer Veteran Women, Andrea K., Nina T., Jeanine H.,Isabel J., and Patricia Z., came in second Place! Also, congratulations to Nina T., Iris C., Lara K., and Sylvia M., together we scored eighth place among the womens' teams! Looking forward to more races this year and seeing many of you out there on the course! Thank you, Flyers! - Andrea K., NYFlyers' Veteran Women's Team Captain
